Our Pearland Dental Implants are Restorative and Cosmetic

Our Pearland Dental Implants are Restorative and Cosmetic

Implant dentistry is a common procedure we provide for our patients at our Pearland dentist office. Although commonly thought of as a restorative dentistry procedure, it also works as an effective cosmetic dental procedure. Here is how.

Why Dental Implants May Be Necessary For Our Pearland Patients

Our Pearland dentists may recommend dental implants if a patient has lost one, two, or several permanent teeth. Our teeth are meant to work together and fit together perfectly. When they do, chewing and talking are both easy and our patients are protected from bone loss and/or facial collapse.

Facial collapse occurs as a result of missing teeth. When the gap left behind by a missing permanent tooth and is left untreated, there is nothing there to support the jaw and lips. If the jaw and lips lack support, the jawbone will shrink and the cheeks will start to sag. This causes the face to sag as well and create a collapsed appearance. Facial collapse quickly makes the face and the patient appear aged, which becomes a cosmetic concern for most of our patients.

How Can Dental Implants Help?

First off, what we refer to as a dental implant is actually a titanium post that is installed into the jawbone. Although this may sound alarming to some, titanium is highly biocompatible, meaning the body adapts to it very well. In fact, titanium is also used in hip and knee replacements, which are both common procedures

After the post is implanted, the healing process takes 4-6 months. Although there is some discomfort, this does not last the entire time. Most of the healing is really the jaw bone adjusting and growing around the titanium post. This process is the most extensive of the overall dental implant procedure, but it is critical, as it ensures the implant stays put for years to come.

Once healing is completed, the post acts as the tooth root and a connecting piece called an abutment is placed over the post. This piece then links the post to a crown our Pearland dentists apply in order to achieve the most natural appearance. The finished procedure fills the gap caused by a missing tooth and allows the implant to fit seamlessly with the rest of the teeth, resulting in a restored, healthy mouth and face, and a bright, confident smile like our other Pearland cosmetic dental procedures.

What Issues Can Dental Veneers Correct For Our Pearland Patients

What Issues Can Dental Veneers Correct For Our Pearland Patients

Dental veneers are a common cosmetic procedure we offer here at Kirby Smiles in Pearland, Texas. We offer many different kinds of veneers: traditional veneers, composite veneers, EMAX veneers, and Empress veneers. Each type is made with different materials, along with their own pros and cons, but many of our Pearland dental patients are not fully aware of what veneers are used for. The truth is, our wide selection of cosmetic dental veneers can correct a number of things our patients may not be happy about when it comes to their teeth.

Dental Problems That Can Be Solved With Veneers

As a cosmetic procedure, veneers are meant to correct any flaws that our patients may feel the desire the correct so that they can smile proudly and confidently.

Teeth Discoloration

Dental veneers can correct any unsightly discoloration. Although teeth whitening is another cosmetic dental service we offer, some of our patients have extensive discoloration and prefer porcelain veneers due to their bright whiteness that makes them look younger and feel the same confidence they felt when they were younger.

Gaps in the Front Teeth

Many patients have gaps in their teeth–most commonly in between the two front teeth. Our dental veneers can be placed over the affected teeth in a way that covers the gap so our patients can have a full smile. This also helps them get a better clean when they brush and floss.

Misshapen Teeth

Dental veneers can also correct teeth that are off in shape. Awkward shape can result from natural unevenness, or even from chipping or breaking. Because dental veneers are applied rather quickly, our patients with misshapen teeth can have their smile back in little time.

How Our Pearland Cosmetic Dentists Recommend You Take Care Of Your Dental Veneers

How Our Pearland Cosmetic Dentists Recommend You Take Care Of Your Dental Veneers

You’ve just received a perfect set of dental veneers and now you’ve got the smile of your dreams. We understand the excitement, and we’re excited for you! But, to maintain your new, beautiful smile, you must take very good care of your veneers.

What’s The Best Way to Keep Your Dental Veneers in Tip-Top Shape?

Here are just some of the ways our Pearland dentists recommend that you care for your veneers so that they look their best for years to come.

Clean Your Dental Veneers Like You Would Your Natural Teeth

It’s a common misconception that once you get veneers, you don’t have to floss or brush as often because they aren’t your natural tooth anymore. The truth is that you must continue to brush your teeth twice a day and floss every night. After all, you still have your natural tooth behind the veneers. If you don’t maintain proper hygiene, you can easily put yourself at risk of gum disease and recession, which may cause your veneers to chip or detach themselves from your teeth.

Avoid Excessive Alcohol

If you frequently consume alcohol, you risk softening the dental cement that keeps your veneers in place. This can make your veneers and your teeth prone to damage and stains, which would defeat the purpose of investing in veneers in the first place.

Use The Right Toothpaste When Brushing Your Dental Veneers

Many toothpaste brands utilize ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide or baking soda, and while these ingredients can work on your natural teeth, they are far too abrasive for your veneers. They can easily scratch and scrub away the surface of your dental veneers, which will cause them to lose their color. For the most part, gel toothpastes will not include these ingredients.

Don’t Skip Out On Your Dental Checkups

Most importantly, you must continue to book and attend your dental cleanings every six months. This helps us regularly ensure you take good care of your veneers, your overall health is good, and allows us to complete a deep cleaning of your teeth.

Have Yellow Teeth? Kirby Smiles in Pearland Offers Teeth Whitening

Have Yellow Teeth? Kirby Smiles in Pearland Offers Teeth Whitening

Having yellow teeth is not fun. It often leads to a lack of confidence and can prevent our patients from showing the true, beautiful smile they have. We help bring out their smiles by offering professional-grade whitening treatments you can use in the comfort of your own home.

What Causes Yellow Teeth?

Our patients find it helpful when they understand what may have caused their teeth to become yellow in the first place. Here are just some of the reasons you may be struggling with yellow teeth.

Watch What You Drink

The drinks we consume have a greater impact on our teeth than most of us realize. Drinks such as coffee, tea, and wine can stain your teeth. This is because they each contain tannins, which are a type of polyphenol. Polyphenols naturally occur in plants and can act as antioxidants, which are good for your overall health. However, consuming these beverages excessively can be a main cause of yellowing.

Weakened Enamel

When enamel is strong and healthy, it is the whitest part of your tooth. When your enamel weakens and wears away, it exposes the underlying dentin, which naturally takes on a yellower hue. You can weaken your enamel by consuming acidic drinks and foods, such as sodas, sugary sweets, citruses, and even starches too often.

Professional Teeth Whitening Treatments Are More Effective Than Store-Bought Treatments

We don’t recommend over-the-counter teeth whitening treatments because they are simply ineffective and don’t last as long as you deserve. At Kirby Smiles in Pearland, Texas, our dentists offer whitening trays customized to each of our individual patients, so they get the results they want with the help of our dentists' expertise. Along with the trays, we give each patient a professional-grade whitening gel that is applied directly to the teeth and releases oxygen ions. These ions make their way into the teeth and remove any deep stains, resulting in a smile that is up to 8 times whiter. OTC whitening treatments merely polish the tooth’s surface.

Our Pearland Dentist Offers Custom At-Home Teeth Whitening Trays

If you would like to brighten up your teeth after years of staining, please schedule an appointment. At your appointment, we will discuss your desired results, how to achieve them, and how to ensure you can show off your white smile for longer.

Different Types of Cosmetic Veneers at Kirby Smiles

Different Types of Cosmetic Veneers at Kirby Smiles

Veneers are one of our more popular cosmetic dentistry treatments here at Kirby Smiles in Houston. In our last blog we explained what veneers are, why people get them, and the process our patients go through when getting their own set of veneers. Did you know that we offer multiple types of veneers at our office?

Traditional Veneers

Traditional veneers are the porcelain veneers you typically think of when someone mentions veneers. They are thin sheets of porcelain that are permanently bonded to the front face of your teeth with a dental cement. Porcelain veneers are favored because of their remarkable brightness, but also because they are compatible with the mouth tissues, resist staining, and last a very long time.

Composite Veneers

Composite veneers are made up of composite resin, which is the same material we use in our tooth-colored fillings. The composite naturally produces a tooth-like color, which takes out the guesswork of trying to match other veneers to your teeth. As veneers, they are often formed directly on the teeth, so matching the natural thickness and contour of the teeth may be a bit challenging, but our cosmetic dentists make sure it's a smooth procedure. Keep in mind, though, that because they match the more common tooth shade, a bright white look may not be achieved. If you are hoping for a bright white smile, then porcelain veneers might be your best option.

EMAX Veneers

EMAX veneers are also referred to as Lithium Silicate veneers. They are often used when restoring broken, chipped, or damaged teeth. This type of veneer is very translucent, which gives it a very natural look as it sits on the teeth. They are very strong and long-lasting, bio-compatible, and easy to apply, polish, and clean. Overall they provide a very low-maintenance solution for better-looking teeth.

Empress Veneers

Empress veneers are a very high-end option. They are made of leucite glass-ceramic and are used in crowns, as well. Patients favor these veneers because of the way in which they scatter light. These offer the most natural, lifelike appearance for many years to come out of any of the other options we offer for veneers.
